The late afternoon sun poured through the blinds of Arby’s living room, casting long golden stripes across the floor. He was sitting on the couch, nursing a black coffee and scrolling absentmindedly through his phone, when the knock came. Three slow, deliberate taps.
He opened the door, and there stood Shayla. Her face was pale, her eyes red—as if she had been holding back tears for days.
"Arby… we need to talk," she whispered.
He hesitated, every instinct telling him to shut the door. They hadn’t spoken in months—not since that night when everything between them had burned to the ground. But something in her trembling voice stopped him.
They sat across from each other, the silence stretching until it felt suffocating. Shayla’s hands twisted nervously in her lap.
"I should’ve told you a long time ago," she began, her voice breaking. "But I was scared… I didn’t want to ruin your life, or Kai’s."
Arby stiffened. Kai?
She took a deep breath, tears welling. "Arby… Kai is your son."
For a moment, the world went silent. Arby’s coffee mug slipped from his fingers, shattering on the floor. His mind was racing—flashes of memories, little moments with Kai that suddenly felt different. The boy’s smile. His laugh. The way his eyes always seemed familiar.
"You’re lying," Arby said, his voice low but shaking. "Shayla, don’t play games with me."
"I’m not lying," she said, pulling a crumpled envelope from her purse. Inside was a DNA test—clear as day. 99.9% probability.
Arby’s chest tightened. He stood up, pacing the room like a trapped animal. "All this time… I thought Kai was Anthony’s."
Shayla wiped her tears. "Everyone did. That’s what I wanted them to believe. But I couldn’t carry this secret anymore. He deserves to know his real father."
Arby sank into the couch, his head in his hands. "Does Kai know?"
She shook her head. "Not yet. I wanted us to tell him together."
Outside, the sun dipped lower, shadows stretching across the room. For the first time in his life, Arby felt the weight of fatherhood settling on his shoulders—a mix of fear, anger, and a strange, fierce protectiveness he hadn’t expected.
When he finally looked up, his voice was hoarse but steady. "Then we tell him tonight."
And just like that, the truth that had been buried for years was about to turn everyone’s world upside down.
