When Shayla Offered Rone a Date… but Rone Rejected Her
The hallway was quiet, almost too quiet. Shayla stood near the window, watching Rone talk to someone on his phone. Her heart was pounding. This wasn’t a joke, and it wasn’t a game. She had rehearsed this moment a hundred times in her head.
When Rone finally turned around, Shayla took a step forward.
Shayla:
“Rone… can I talk to you for a minute?”
Rone nodded, slightly confused.
Rone:
“Yeah, sure. What’s up?”
There was a pause. Shayla swallowed hard, then looked straight into his eyes.
Shayla:
“I’m just going to say it. I like you. I’ve liked you for a long time.”
(beat)
“I was wondering if you’d like to go on a date with me.”
For a moment, Rone said nothing.
The silence stretched. Shayla’s hope hung in the air like fragile glass.
Rone exhaled slowly.
Rone:
“Shayla… I respect you for being honest. That took courage.”
Shayla’s lips curved into a small, hopeful smile.
Rone (continuing):
“But I can’t say yes.”
The smile vanished.
Shayla:
“Why? Did I do something wrong?”
Rone:
“No. You didn’t do anything wrong.”
(looks away)
“I’m just not in a place where I can feel what you deserve. And it wouldn’t be fair to you if I pretended.”
Shayla’s eyes filled with tears, but she refused to let them fall.
Shayla:
“So… that’s it? Just like that?”
Rone:
“I’m sorry. I don’t want to hurt you, but lying would hurt you more.”
Those words hit harder than shouting ever could.
Shayla nodded slowly.
Shayla:
“At least you were honest.”
She turned to leave, then stopped.
Shayla (without turning back):
“Just know… it took everything in me to ask.”
She walked away.
Rone stood frozen, guilt heavy on his chest. He knew he had done the right thing—but the right thing still left damage behind.
Shayla stepped outside, finally letting the tears fall.
She hadn’t lost her dignity.
She hadn’t lost her self-respect.
She had only lost an expectation.
And sometimes… that hurts the most.
